3 Easy Steps to Make this Large Skull Planter for Halloween

Crafts | DIY Decor | Holiday | Make it! | Planters

Halloween is just around the corner and if you haven’t done it yet, it’s time to start decorating! Personally, I’ve embraced a. skull theme this year. Skull candle sticks, skull planter, skull everything1

The good news is that  you don’t need to spend a ton of money or time decorating. Right now, dollar stores and craft stores are packed with tons of Halloween basics.

The beauty of basics is that you can take that dollar store item and customize it to make it your own.   I was able to turn an ordinary plastic skull into a colorful Halloween themed planter.

I was inspired by this faux succulent skull planter over at A Beautiful Mess. They look so  cool you could leave them up all year. The best part is that this planter is so easy to make! If you’re scrambling to get some last minute Halloween decorations up, this one is a breeze.

What You’ll Need:

  • Large Plastic Skull
  • Spray Paint
  • Sharp scissors

You can get this project done in three easy steps. First, spray paint your skull any color you want  I used Krylon’s Blue Ocean Breeze but I also think pink of gold would look awesome.

Once that is dry, carefully use your scissors to cut out a hole in the top of the skull. I used a drill with a round hole bit to get mine started but the scissors cut through the plastic easily.

The final step is to fill your skull with dirt and pop in a plant. I chose to plant a succulent that wouldn’t need too much care or water since I  didn’t add drainage holes. Although those can be easily added with the drill.

If you want to make a set, this planter looks great with the Day of the Dead air plant and candle holders that I did a couple weeks ago. You can check out those projects in the above links.  Happy Halloween!
