If you’re visiting Marfa, make sure to book a couple of nights at El Cosmico for a stay that is as unique as the town itself. El Cosmico is the ultimate glamping experience, complete with clusters of very Instagram-able tipis and candy-colored, vintage airstream trailers. From the moment you step onto the property, you’ll be charmed by it’s. hip and somewhat quirky aesthetic.

Accommodations

There are only a few hotels in Marfa and, the spots at El Cosmico are in high demand. Make sure you book well in advance to get your preferred space.

There is a range of room options (and prices) at El Cosmicos stating at the most basic byo-tent or camper. At the next level are the safari tents, tipi, and yurts. These options include a queen-sized bed, lights, and simple furnishings. They may look basic from the outside but each has hardwood floors, electricity and lighting. They also provide electric blankets for those chilly dessert nights.

For a little more luxury, you can book an airstream trailer or the 325 sq. foot “Cosmic Kasita” tiny house. For an additional fee, you can also rent a dutch hot tub and have a soak while you stare up at the stars.

Six Things to Know Before You Book at El Cosmico:

  • Desert nights in the winter can dip well below freezing and the tents don’t’ offer indoor heat.  Make sure you take this into consideration when planning you’re visit. Even when its not wintertime, desert temperatures can take a steep dip at night. Pack warm clothes and PJs. If temperatures are going to be very low, you may want to avoid the tent camping altogether.
  • The showers are  outdoors and for the most part communal, Pack shower shoes.
  • Pack light, The path through the campsite is a bit of a haul through unpaved desert landscape. Luggage is self transported to your temporary digs in wagons with thick black tires.
  • Take a cooler if your spot doesn’t offer a fridge. There is a great outdoor communal kitchen where you can prepare simple meals, mingle with other guests and have a drink or two..
  • Pack a flashlight There is limited lighting on the property which is fantastic for stargazing but not as great for navigating to the outdoor bathroom in the middle of the night.
  • The dessert can be a bit dry. Bring your moisturizer, and plenty of water.

Lounge in one of the communal hammocks while you charge your device.

The communal kitchen is clean and well equipped. It’s a great place to have a drink and mingle with other guests.

El Cosmico is a lot of things but, it’s not luxury and it’s not for everyone. If you decide it’s not your cup of tea, I still recommend popping by for a visit. You can wander the grounds and take a few photos.

If you do want to stay somewhere that is right in tune with Marfa’s hip and somewhat offbeat vibe, then this is your spot. It’s certainly a unique experience that you won’t’ ‘soon forget.
