Make a Statement with Custom Wire Letter Necklace
I was cleaning out some of my craft supplies for my craft room update and came across a spool of gold wire. I decided to try my hand at making a wire letter necklace. Making these may take a little bit of trial and error to get the wire to bend the way you want it to. However, if you get flexible enough wire, forming the letters is actually easier than it looks.
A wire letter necklace can be customized in dozens of different ways. Choose a meaningful word, make a statement, or personalize a gift for someone (or yourself ) by writing their name.
What You’ll Need:
- gold wire (around 20 gauge)
- jewelry pliers
- craft scissors
- gold metal chain
- small jump rings
- gold clasps (optional)
- paper and pen
Using your paper and pen, practice drawing out your word or name using one continuous line. Start to visualize how your gold wire will wrap around to form the letters. Once you’ve practiced and feel confident, cut a piece of the gold wire about 6 inches long. You want to make sure that your wire is malleable enough to bend into letters but firm enough to maintain its shape over time. I used a 20 gauge non tarnish gold wire that worked well. Using your pliers, start to bend the wire into shape. Make sure to twist a loop on either end where you will hang the chain.
Once you have the letters the way you want them, add a jump ring to each loop, attach the chain, and close the jump ring using the pliers. I made mine long enough to slip on but, if you want yours shorter, you can add a clasp to the back.
This necklace is enough of a statement to stand on it’s own but, it’s also simple enough to look great layered with other pieces. Plus, the jump ring is big enough for me to slide it around and off of the lettering when I want to. This way, I can swap out multiple words using the same chain making this piece even more versatile.
