I have seen faux paintbrush items popping up everywhere and, I am so on board with it. Everything including, serving trays and dinnerware, pillows and rugs, wallpaper, and even furniture has been embellished with colorful paintbrush strokes. The look is so easygoing and joyous. In this DIY, I drew inspiration from the trend to make vinyl faux paintbrush planters that can add a happy pop of color to any space.

What You’ll Need:

Permanent Outdoor Vinyl in your choice of colors (I went monochromatic with a pop of gold.)

Terracotta pots

Vinyl Cutter

The downloadable template below. It can be used with your vinyl cutter to cut the brushstroke shapes. Feel free to adjust the size as needed to fit whatever sized pot you are using.

I used my iPad and the drawing app Procreate to create brushstrokes of different sizes and shapes. Then, I uploaded that image into the Cricut design space. I used the smoothing tool to simplify the shapes and to make them easier and quicker to cut.

You can make your own using this method or download the SVG file below.

Prep: Faux Paintbrush Planters

Start by cutting out a few pieces of the brushstroke shapes in each of your colors. Don’t have a vinyl cutter? With a good pair of craft scissors, you can cut similar shapes or any other fun shapes that you can think of for a more abstract look.

Assemble: Faux Paintbrush Planters

Once the shapes are cut, simply peel the vinyl pieces off of the backing and stick them onto the planter in a random pattern. Since we are not going for straight lines, there is no need to use transfer tape. I overlapped my vinyl pieces in order to fit more on the pot. It also helped create the illusion of random paint lines on a canvas.

After your vinyl is applied, press firmly to smooth out any bumps or air bubbles to make sure the edges are flat and stuck firmly onto the pot. Using permanent outdoor vinyl makes these pots safe outside in the rain and during watering.

Once you start to build up your collection of planters, you can display them in this space-saving, vertical, hanging planter.
