7 Items You Need for Your First Home

First Home | Home DIYs | Slide

You know that feeling when you step into somebody’s house and you instantly know that they have their life in order? Their apartment just screams, “an adult lives here!” Want to create that vibe in your own home? Here are 7 items you need for your first home. Think your place is already a beacon of adulthood? We’ve got you covered with the advanced essentials.

1. An iron AND an ironing board

Sure it’s easy to have one of these items but when you stop ironing on your floor, your bed, or (eekk) your body, that’s when you know you’ve crossed that threshold into adulthood.

 Advanced: A Clothes Steamer

2. A Tea Kettle

Okay, it may not get used that often. In fact, you may only use it once a year to boil water for jello shots. But, when someone walks into your house and sees a red tea kettle sitting on your stove, they are instantly thinking “ADULT!”

Advanced: An espresso machine

3. A Sharp Knife

This one’s all about practicality. You may own a knife. You may even own a whole set of knives, but, do you own a knife that doesn’t bring sweat to your brow or a tear to your eye whenever you try to cut a sweet potato or butternut squash?

 Advanced: A knife sharpener

4. Matching Guest Towels

Everyone has that relative or friend that they go visit who will hand you the plushest, whitest, coziest guest towels. Those towels that make you feel like you’re in a five-star hotel. The host even acts like they’re no big deal saying, “if you need extra towels, just go to the linen closet. I have plenty!” Guess what. They’re probably not even towels. They’re bath sheets!! That’s like towels much more popular and successful older sibling. Ugh…what a show-off

Advanced: A white bathrobe

5. Fancy bath soaps, hand towels, and candles

Speaking of bathroom staples, nothing says “adult” more than a bathroom full of things you’re not sure you’re allowed to touch let alone use.

Advanced: A Bath Tray

6. A wall-mounted TV

Not having to prop your iPhone up every time you sit down to binge-watch your favorite TV show is very adult.

Advanced: Cable….or at least a Netflix account that doesn’t belong to your sister’s roommate’s ex-boyfriend.

7. A plant (that isn’t half dead)

Do you know what’s adult? The ability to keep something else alive. If you don’t have a green. thumb, fill your home with low maintenance plants like Pink Angel or Superba. These adapt well to low light settings and will easily recover if you forget to water them. Air plants, Aloe, and Snake plants also do well when left alone. If you want some ideas for cute DIY planters, click here or here.

Advanced: A Dog
